Checking Your Engine Oil

An Easy Guide

It takes a lot of different fluids for your car or truck to run properly, but the engine oil might be the most important. While your owner’s manual prescribes a schedule for lube services, it’s a good idea to periodically conduct an oil inspection so you can assess the motor oil’s current condition. Here’s a guide from the pros at Carlisle Air Automotive in North San Antonio on how to perform this easy task.

Gather Your Supplies

You need the right tools to perform any task, and inspection of your oil is no different. This project doesn’t require any special pieces, and you probably already have everything you need in your garage. Before starting, park your vehicle on level ground and let it cool down while you gather a few simple items:

  • Paper towel or shop rag
  • Owner’s manual
  • Flashlight

Perform the Inspection

Consult your owner’s manual to find the location of the dipstick under the hood. If the manufacturer recommends a warm engine for an accurate inspection, run your car for a few minutes to let the oil circulate. Locate the dipstick and use a flashlight if you’re having difficulty seeing in the engine compartment.

Pull the stick out, wipe it clean and then reinsert it into the tube. When you withdraw it a second time, look to see if the level falls within the acceptable range marked on the dipstick and check to make sure it’s a healthy brown or black color. As you clean it off again, keep an eye out for any metal fragments that could be a symptom of engine damage. That’s all it takes to make sure the oil in your car is good to go!
