How the A/C Works

Your vehicle's A/C works using a refrigerant that circulates through low- and high-pressure sides. This allows the physical state to change between a more liquified formulation to a gaseous compound. As it circulates, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, dissipating it to the outside air. Excess moisture is also removed, making the air entering the passenger cabin more comfortable and protecting system components from excess dampness. Major components include the compressor, condenser, evaporator, orifice tube/expansion valve, and receiver/drier/accumulator. The compressor is typically considered by most mechanics to be the "heart" of the system because it is ground zero for the refrigerant's change of states.

Recognizing Signs of a Bad Compressor

Although it's a good idea to have us check and service your air conditioner regularly, there are recognizable signs that may point to compressor failure. If the compressor isn't working at all, you'll typically find that your system will power on, but the air blowing through the vents will be hot. Even when the compressor itself isn't broken, a refrigerant leak/low level or a bad clutch can prevent the component from properly doing its job. In addition to feeling uncooled air, you may hear odd noises. Be aware of rattles, whines, and grinds when the A/C is on. These may indicate internal compressor damage or faulty bearings. You may also notice a vibration sensation when you turn on the system. Finally, a squealing serpentine belt may also point toward a failed compressor if seizure prevents the pulley from turning.
